Q. What is the best strategy to build self-confidence?

Not caring as much about what other people think. The big roadblock to gaining self-confidence on camera is starting. Most people won’t do that very first video for 3 main reasons: lack of confidence, time or technology. If you never start you don’t give yourself the opportunity to build self-confidence through practice. I did a short video on this topic.


Q. Another point that you always highlight is consistency. How important is consistency and how can business people, entrepreneurs and professionals be consistent yet relevant to what is going on around them?

Most people find it challenging to stick to a strict schedule of creating and publishing content but I’d rather see you publish irregularly than not at all. Batch recording is the process of recording several videos at once rather than one at a time. Let’s say you carve out a half day to record four videos. You can then schedule those four individual videos to be released once per week for a month. Live streaming is another way to stay consistent because it eliminates the need for editing and makes the process more efficient.

Q. How can the individual’s story contribute to his or her own brand? 

Information is a commodity. Answers are only a search bar away. Through story, we bring insight and context to information. Your specific experience, knowledge and point of view is what differentiates you and builds your personal brand. 

Q. Usually, personal stories trigger emotion. How do we know if our story triggers the right emotions of the audience?

Last year I spoke at a private women’s networking group about entrepreneurship. I shared with 10 women my deeply personal story of the struggles of going out on my own. By the end, the entire room was wiping away tears including me. It wasn’t scripted. It was just me speaking from the heart and telling my story. Why was the room crying? Because they related to what I shared. We all commented before the meeting ended how we felt that something special happened in that room that day and that we created an unspoken bond. That’s the power of story.
